October 15th-19th

ANNOUNCEMENTS AND REMINDERS:

As you might hear from your children today, I'M ENGAGED! And I'm so excited!  The students were very excited and so cute today with their questions and their comments.

Conferences are this week!  If you're not sure what time you are scheduled for or you need to reschedule, please contact me ASAP!  Remember to send me any of your questions ahead of time so that I can prepare the materials to answer them.  Conferences are scheduled for Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday of this week!

This Thursday is our field trip to the Portland Museum of Art!  Please remember to send your child to school with a packed lunch that day!

Homework packets are due tomorrow, Tuesday, October 16th!

Please remember to send you child's boomerang folders (2-pocket folders) everyday!  We use them to transport materials between home and school.

This week in...

Phonics:  We are working with the long and short o sound.  We are practicing with the following words:  box, fox, dog, lock, pot, cone, hope, rope, poke, and rose.

Vocabulary:  Our new vocabulary words of the week are:  cuddle, favorite, patient, practiced, settled, and wrinkled.  We will figure out what these words mean, how to use them in a sentence, and build a connection to them to that we can remember them and use them later.  Then, we'll search for them in a story called My New Home by Miguel Vasquez.

Comprehension:  We will continue to practice our summarizing skills but we are also going to introduce the skill of making and confirming predictions.  This means we are going to make a reasonable guess about what will happen in a story and then read on to find out whether or not our prediction was correct.  We'll practice these skills in a story called My Name is Yoon by Helen Recorvits.

Writing:  We are continuing to write, revise, and edit our stories about our lives 20 years from now.

Read Aloud:  This week, we are just about to finish up Charlotte's Web.  On Friday, we'll be watching the movie and making a venn diagram to see the similarities and differences between the book and the movie.

Mystery Reader:  We'll have our very first mystery reader this week!  If you would like to sign up to be a mystery reader and read a short picture book to Team Blowey, let me know!

Math:  We are continuing to practice our geometry goals.  Students are learning how to identify two and three-dimensional shapes, counting sides, angles, and faces of shapes, as well as learning how to draw shapes with specific attributes.  During goal time, students are meeting with me for lessons around their specific goal.   When students are not working with me, they are using their menus to make choices for how they will practice their goals.

I hope you have an exciting week!
